Enabling a Smooth On-Premise to Cloud ERP Transition

Your Partner in Seamless Transitions to Cloud ERP Systems

Staying ahead means embracing change, and many businesses are shifting from on premise ERP solutions towards cloud-based ones . As deadlines for on-premise support approaches for various ERP systems, the move to cloud ERP is not just inevitable, it’s essential. Can!do can help make this transition a seamless one.

Why Transition?

Cloud ERP solutions facilitate competitive advantage. Cost-effectiveness, scalability, improved performance, and robust security enhance your business processes while reducing dependency on IT. The integration of AI, ML and Analytics further enhances the value of the ERP system.

However, a system does not hold inherent value in and of itself: it is the people who use it, who realise the value. The extent to which they are able to do that, is commensurate with the extent to which they are trained in the new system and new processes and this is directly linked to return on technology investment.

Why a Smooth Transition Matters

A smooth ERP transition with Can!do means minimising disruption and maximising benefits for all:

The Can!do Difference

Approaches to Migrating to The Cloud

Transitions to cloud-based ERP systems follow one of 3 approaches which all vary in terms of complexity.

Cloud-Based ERP Migration Approaches

Greenfields Approach

The Greenfields approach is akin to starting from scratch. It involves building a new ERP system with no constraints from legacy systems. The process includes designing new processes, selecting new technologies, and implementing a completely new system architecture.

It’s a ground-up approach that allows for innovation but can be riskier and more resource-intensive.

Brownfields Approach

The Brownfields approach- Contrary to Greenfields, the Brownfields approach involves upgrading or migrating an existing ERP system to the cloud. It builds upon the existing infrastructure, retaining many of the current applications’ functions, especially those that are difficult to recreate.

This approach can be less risky and more cost-effective as it leverages existing investments but may limit the extent of transformation.

Bluefields Approach

The Bluefields Approach in the context of ERP cloud migrations is a hybrid strategy that combines elements of both the Greenfields and Brownfields approaches. It allows organisations to migrate their existing ERP systems to the cloud while selectively choosing which parts of the system to keep, upgrade, or re-implement.

This approach aims to maximise the value of existing investments by retaining beneficial customisations and data, but also enables the adoption of new processes and technologies where needed. It’s often described as offering the best of both worlds, providing flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and a lower risk profile compared to starting from scratch or simply upgrading the existing system

ERP Cloud Migration Strategies

Besides the Greenfields, Brownfields and Bluefields approaches, there are other strategies for ERP cloud migrations.

Cloud-Based ERP Migration Approaches

Lift & Shift

This method involves moving the existing ERP system to the cloud with minimal changes. It’s a straightforward approach that can be faster and less costly but may not take full advantage of cloud capabilities.

Re-platforming

This approach involves making some optimisations to the system during the migration to better adapt to the cloud environment. It’s a middle ground between lift and shift and a full-scale transformation.

Application Refactoring

Also known as re-architecting, this strategy involves significant changes to the system’s architecture to fully leverage cloud-native features and capabilities. It is the most complex and potentially the most beneficial approach.

SaaS (Software as a Service)

This approach involves replacing the existing ERP system with a cloud-native SaaS solution. It allows companies to use a modern ERP system without maintaining the underlying infrastructure

SAP ERP Systems Cloud Environments

SAP ERP systems can be deployed in various cloud environments, each offering different levels of control, customisation, and management. Here’s a brief explanation of the different permutations:

Public Cloud

Referred to as Grow with SAP S/4 HANA- The SAP S/4HANA Cloud (essential edition) is offered as a public cloud solution. It’s typically multi-tenant, meaning the service provider runs your service in a shared environment. Public clouds are known for their efficiency and affordability.

Private Cloud

Referred to as Rise with SAP S/4 HANA- The SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private edition, is a single-tenant environment where the provider runs services in a dedicated environment. It offers more security and control and can be hosted within a company’s own data centre or on IaaS platforms like AWS, Azure, GCP, or Alibaba Cloud1.

Hybrid Cloud

This approach combines both public and private clouds, allowing businesses to balance the need for control and customisation with the benefits of cloud scalability and efficiency.

Multi-Cloud:

In a multi-cloud setup, an organisation uses multiple cloud services from different providers. This can help avoid vendor lock-in and optimise services based on different providers’ strengths. Each of these deployment options has its own set of advantages and considerations, and the choice depends on the organisation’s specific needs, such as security, compliance, scalability, and cost.

Where Cloud Investments Drive Positive Outcomes

As per the 2022 Deloitte US Future of Cloud Survey Report, leading organisations go beyond using cloud to achieve efficiency and agility; they use it to drive innovation.

As per the 2022 Deloitte US Future of Cloud Survey Report, leading organisations go beyond using cloud to achieve efficiency and agility; they use it to drive innovation.

Deloitte and McKinsey often emphasise the importance of user adoption in the successful implementation of enterprise-wide systems. They suggest that without proper user engagement and training, even the most sophisticated systems can fail to deliver the expected business value. This is because effective adoption leads to better utilisation of the system’s capabilities, which in turn drives productivity and efficiency gains.

Conversely, projects that neglect user adoption are more likely to experience challenges, including low user engagement, poor utilisation of system features, and, ultimately, a lower ROI. These projects may also have higher rates of failure or require significant rework, which can be costly.

50% of organisational and technology implementation projects fail to meet expectations due to underestimation of human factors and users' adoption. Deloitte, 2023
